Popular Coastal Recreation Trail

Everyone agrees, the Recreation Trail that girds the Monterey Bay from Santa Cruz to the tip of the Monterey Bay at Asilomar Beach, is a great way to see Monterey Bay.  On the Monterey Peninsula itself (the Southern extreme of the trail) the Recreation Trail offers quick access to everything from Del Monte beaches to Cannery Row to Asilomar Beach in Pacific Grove.  If you are planning an excursion along the Trail, one of the best places to start is at Fisherman’s Wharf at the foot of Historic Old Monterey.  After eating a hearty, complimentary hot breakfast at our hotel the morning after you arrive, plan to start out at the Wharf for a trek to Cannery Row, the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Pacific Grove’s Lover’s Point.  The Wharf is a great place to discover things you might want to do tomorrow, such as sailing tours, whale-watching tours, fishing trips and restaurants for lunch or dinner.  You can easily spend an hour or more investigating all the fun and savory things that you might want to do later.  Have fun at the Wharf, it’s a great starting point for an exciting day of Recreation Trail exploration.

Monterey on a Budget

A weekend getaway on the Monterey Peninsula often involves kids and keeping them occupied.  A great getaway doesn’t always mean big or expensive events, a getaway can be as simple as getting out of the city for awhile and visiting Monterey.  Obvious choices are a day on the beach at Del Monte Beach or Lover’s Point Cove in Pacific Grove.  However, there are alternatives a-plenty.  Ask our Front Desk Associates about places to purchase a sumptuous picnic lunch and make a day of it at Lake El Estero right by Old Monterey.  There, you can rent paddle boats or kayaks and spend the day on the lake.  Another use for that picnic lunch would be to visit the playground at Dennis-the-Menace Park—also by Lake El Estero—where there are picnic benches, grills and a large play area for the younger set complete with swings, jungle gym and other play-inspiring toys.  Afterward, finish off the day with dinner at the kid-friendly Bubba-Gump seafood restaurant in Cannery Row.  Return that night to a comfortable room at our hotel with accommodations for the whole family. Maybe just relax and watch a movie on our new Flat Screen TVs, or relax at the Poolside or if you want to get some exercise use our fitness room.  In the morning, enjoy our complimentary  hot served daily 7am to 10am.

Chic Restaurant just opened- Restaurant 1833

I think I have just found my new favorite restaurant in Monterey! The former Stokes Adobe restaurant just went through a major renovation. An elegant, chic and modern makeover is the perfect setting for incredible California fresh cuisine. The multiple dining rooms and hip bars spread over two floors not only lend an elegance but are very inviting in shades of gray and white. Antique looking chandeliers and candles through out the restaurant. Not sure about the coed bathrooms. But I will get over that if the guys don’t mind women powdering their noses!

We started with cocktails out by the fire pits. I think had we not had dinner reservation, I would have been content sitting outside all evening. However the dining experience was incredible. Our starters included mac and cheese, signature corn bread, bone marrow, roasted cauliflower, and baked goat cheese with hazelnuts. Main entrees included Fresh pea raviolis with mushrooms, Gnoochi in Leek sauce, Rib eye, and pasta. Out of this world! Not one of us could fault any taste. Incidentally all in my party are avid cooks be it being amateurs, we do have a discriminating pallet.

Prices were moderate. Coctails and wine definitely added to the final bill. Wait staff were professional but very personable. Definitely added to our dining experience. Next time I do want to try the Asinthe served classic style dripping ice water over a sugar cube!

I contemplated saving Restaurant 1833 for special occasion, but the fire pits, the chic decor and incredible food will certainly be haunting me to go back sooner with my girls!

Kudos to the owners and chef for one of a kind restaurant in Monterey.
