Most of the Highway 1 scenic drive clings to the coastline of the majestic Pacific Ocean….here is where the heaven meets the earth. At every turn you will experience a sight that you will forever remember. Forget about the glitzy restaurants, the upscale shopping, or answering your cell phones. The Drive is about experiencing the Redwoods blending into the mountains, the sunset embracing the blue waters, the whales on their migratory journeys, the dolphins’ bopping in the waters, the seals lazing on the rocks. Along the way you will find affordable food…but how about packing a picnic basket and a blanket and stop at one of many vistas along the way. You can even hike down to the white sandy beaches, explore the dunes and caves, and the 80ft waterfalls at Pfeiffer State Park.

I love this drive. So beautiful to spend a day along the California coast! I have never been to Pfeiffer State Park but now I want to go check out the waterfalls.

Can you recommend any good restaurants along the way if I am driving south along Highway 1 to Monterey/Carmel area?

Nestled in the Santa Lucia Mountains and perched on a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean you will find Nepenthe’s Restaurant along Highway I. Comfort Inn is located approximately 30 minutes away.

The drive along the Big Sur coast winds through one of the last stands of ancient redwoods left in this country. These are not the giant Sequoia, but the towering coastal redwoods that used to run the length of the West Coast. Driving Highway 1 south is magical with redwoods on one side and the ocean stretching to infinity on the other.
